For six centuries the city smelted iron at scale, herded cattle across savanna it watered with engineered reservoirs, exported to the Red Sea world, wrote in a script we can pronounce but not read, and buried its rulers under dozens of steep desert pyramids.

After the Kushite withdrawal from Egypt in the seventh century BCE, the centre of gravity shifted from Napata, near the fourth cataract, to Meroë, several hundred kilometres upriver. The reasons were practical. Meroë lies in a belt that catches enough summer rain for agriculture without depending on the Nile flood, so the kingdom could feed itself from savanna as well as riverbank. It had iron ore and, crucially, woodland for charcoal. It sat at the head of caravan routes running east to the Red Sea, bypassing the Nile's difficult cataracts entirely, and south into the savanna. It was also further from Egypt and whichever empire currently held it — Assyrian, Persian, Ptolemaic, Roman. Distance was a defence policy.

The first thing a visitor sees approaching the royal city is not a temple but a heap of black slag, the waste of iron smelting, and there are several of them, large. Nineteenth-century travellers called Meroë the Birmingham of Africa, and archaeologists have confirmed sustained large-scale smelting in bloomery furnaces over centuries. Excavations have found furnace bases, tuyères and ore preparation areas. What the industry meant is more argued. The older interpretation — that Meroë was an iron-exporting powerhouse whose metal underpinned its military and economic dominance — has been questioned. Some archaeologists read the slag as the accumulated by-product of ordinary domestic production over six hundred years rather than evidence of export at scale, and note that iron artefacts are less common in Meroitic burials than the industrial story implies. The environmental angle is less disputed. Charcoal production on this scale required enormous quantities of wood, and the deforestation of the surrounding country is one of the factors proposed for the city's eventual decline.

Meroitic engineers built hafirs: large circular basins excavated in the ground and surrounded by embankments, designed to catch and hold seasonal rainfall runoff, with silt traps and stone-lined access ramps for cattle. Some exceed 200 metres in diameter. They allowed herding and settlement well away from the river, effectively expanding the kingdom's habitable territory into land that would otherwise support life only during the rains. The hafir is a good example of a technology that gets overlooked because it is earth rather than stone. It required survey, labour organisation, maintenance against silting, and a legal framework for who could water what. Some are still in use, or have been reconstructed, in the same region today.

Meroitic art and architecture blend Egyptian inheritance, Hellenistic contact and indigenous Nubian invention into something recognisably its own. Royal reliefs show rulers in Egyptian-derived poses but with fuller, rounder bodies and distinctly Nubian regalia. The lion-god Apedemak, purely Kushite, appears with multiple heads and arms at the Lion Temple at Naqa, alongside a kiosk with Roman arches and Egyptian cornices in the same complex. Amun remained central at Jebel Barkal and Naqa. The finds are international. Roman bronzes, including the buried head of Augustus. Hellenistic glass. Indian and Egyptian goods. And locally made pottery of exceptional quality — thin-walled eggshell ware with painted decoration that ranks among the finest ceramics of the ancient world. The city itself had a walled royal enclosure with palaces and a bath complex fed by a water system, temples, industrial zones and residential quarters, with the cemeteries and their pyramids on the ridge to the east.

Sudan has more ancient pyramids than Egypt. They are a different creature: smaller, much steeper — around seventy degrees against Giza's fifty-two — and built as markers over a burial chamber cut into rock beneath, with an offering chapel attached to the east face. The Meroë royal cemeteries hold around two hundred, in tight ranks across the desert ridge, with the earlier royal necropolises at El-Kurru and Nuri nearby. Taharqa's pyramid at Nuri is the largest. Many were destroyed by Giuseppe Ferlini, an Italian treasure hunter who in the 1830s systematically blew the tops off dozens of pyramids looking for gold. He found a hoard of gold jewellery in Amanishakheto's tomb, which is now split between Berlin and Munich, and left the cemetery permanently damaged — one of the most destructive single episodes in the archaeology of Africa.

Meroitic writing appears from around the second century BCE in two forms: a hieroglyphic script for monuments and a cursive for everyday use, both alphabetic with around twenty-three signs, and both derived in form from Egyptian while working on completely different principles. Francis Llewellyn Griffith worked out the phonetic values in 1909, using royal names known from other sources. So the inscriptions can be read aloud. The language, though, resists translation: only names, titles, kinship terms, a handful of nouns and some formulaic funerary phrases are securely understood. The corpus is also small — a few thousand texts, most of them short funerary inscriptions with limited vocabulary. What would break the problem is a substantial bilingual text, which is why every new excavation carries the possibility of transforming the field.

Meroë faded in the fourth century CE. King Ezana of Aksum left an inscription describing a campaign into the region, and older histories treated this as the conquest that killed the kingdom. The current reading is that Ezana arrived late. Trade had shifted to the Red Sea corridor that Aksum controlled, cutting Meroë out of the routes that had enriched it. Centuries of smelting and grazing had degraded the environment. Desert-edge groups — the Noba, from whom Nubia takes its name — were moving in and asserting themselves. The royal burials stop before Ezana's campaign. What replaced Kush were the successor kingdoms of Nobatia, Makuria and Alodia, which took up Christianity in the sixth century and built a literate Nubian Christian culture that lasted almost a thousand years.

Meroë is the answer to anyone who thinks African urbanism south of Egypt began with outside contact. It is an industrial city with heavy metallurgy, engineered water supply, a writing system of its own, an international art style and a state that negotiated with Rome as an equal. It is also, right now, extremely vulnerable. Sudan's antiquities have suffered from dam-building on the Nile that flooded archaeological zones, from mechanised illicit gold mining that has bulldozed sites in the desert, from chronic underfunding, and since April 2023 from a full-scale civil war. The Sudan National Museum in Khartoum, which held the finest Kushite and Meroitic collections in the world, has been looted and damaged, with objects reported on international markets. The archaeology of Meroë survived Ferlini's dynamite. Whether it survives this decade is an open question, and one that gets far less attention than comparable losses elsewhere.
