Answers to the questions we are asked most. If yours is not here, send us a message and a real person will reply. Have an idea for something new instead? Share it on the ideas board.
Do I need an account to use MOTHERLAND?
No. You can read the books, explore the map and play the games without signing in.
An account saves your progress, streak, passport stamps and league position, and lets you switch between devices. It is free.
I cannot sign in
Use the same method you signed up with — email, Google, Apple or Microsoft. Signing in with a different method creates a separate account.
For an email account, use 'Forgot password' on the sign-in page to set a new one.
Still stuck? Send us a message from this page and we will look up your account.
How do I change my name, country or notifications?
Open Settings from the account menu. Changes save straight away.
What do the plans include?
Free — the whole platform, with ads.
Standard £0.99/month — no ads.
Premium £2.99/month — no ads and you can publish stories.
Premium+ £4.99/month — everything above plus contributing to the Knowledge Bank.
Educator £9.99/month or £114.99/year — for a whole school or a private tutor: unlimited classes of up to 35 learners, dashboards, assignments and exports.
Where do I see what I am paying?
Your Billing page shows your plan, the amount, whether you pay monthly or yearly, and your next renewal date.
From there you can open the secure payment portal to view invoices, change your card or cancel.
How do I cancel, and what happens to my access?
Cancel from the Billing page. You keep everything you have paid for until the end of the period you already paid, then the account returns to Free.
Nothing you have created, read or earned is deleted when a plan ends.
My payment failed
We retry automatically for a few days and you keep your access in the meantime.
Update your card on the Billing page to fix it immediately. If you were charged twice or need a refund, message support and an admin will sort it.
I am a private tutor, not a school. Can I use the Educator plan?
Yes. Choose 'Private tutor' when you set up, and everything reads as your practice rather than a school.
The price is the same, you can run unlimited classes of up to 35 learners, and you can invite an assistant if you work with someone.
How do learners join a class?
Every class has a join code. Learners enter it on the Join page after signing in.
Teachers only ever see learning activity — never a learner's email, birthday or heritage answers.
How do I add another teacher?
On the Staff page, create an invite code and share it. They sign up with their own login and enter the code on the Join page.
Admins can see every class; teachers see only their own.
How do I follow my child's progress?
Create a child profile on the Family page. Each child gets their own reading level, games and streak, and you see what they have played and read.
Older children with their own account can link to you with a family code instead.
Can we use the app offline?
Yes, on the published site. Once a page has been opened, it stays available offline, and anything a learner does offline syncs when they reconnect.
My progress has disappeared
Progress is tied to the account you were signed into. If you played as a guest and then signed up, some earlier play may not carry over.
Message support with the date and we will check what is on your account.
How do I publish a story?
With a Premium plan or above, open the Studio, write or upload your story and submit it. An editor reviews it before it goes live.
You keep your name on the work unless you choose to post anonymously.
Who can contribute to the Knowledge Bank?
Premium+ members and approved experts. Every entry needs named sources, and editors check the evidence before publishing.
What do you store about me?
What you read, answer and save — nothing about DNA, ethnicity or family origins beyond what you type yourself.
You can download everything we hold, or delete your account and all its data, from Settings.
What about children's data?
Child profiles belong to the adult who created them and hold only a first name, age band and learning activity.
Teachers and school admins see learning activity only.
