The standard world history has agriculture beginning in the Fertile Crescent and spreading outward. Africa is normally treated as a recipient. It was not. Africa hosts several independent centres of plant domestication, working with a completely different set of species and, in several regions, on a different sequence — herding animals first, cultivating cereals later, which reverses the Near Eastern pattern. The crops involved were selected for African conditions: high heat, intense sun, low and erratic rainfall, thin or lateritic soils, and long dry seasons. That makes them agronomically distinct from the wheat-and-barley package, and it is why they still dominate where they do.

Four broad zones, each with its own crop package. The Ethiopian highlands produced coffee, teff, enset (the false banana whose corm and stem feed millions in the south-west), noog oilseed and finger millet, with Ethiopian varieties of barley and wheat developed locally over millennia. The Sahel and savanna belt gave sorghum, pearl millet, cowpea, bambara groundnut, watermelon, and fonio — the fastest-maturing cereal in Africa, ready in six to eight weeks. The West African forest and its margins gave yams, oil palm, okra, kola nut, ackee and African rice, Oryza glaberrima, domesticated independently in the inland Niger delta around 3,000 years ago from a wild African species, entirely separate from the Asian rice lineage. East and Southern Africa contributed melons, gourds, sesame and, through herding, distinct cattle lineages. Later, crops arriving from Asia and the Americas — bananas, maize, cassava, groundnut — were absorbed and locally bred, and today's African farming is a hybrid of all of it.

Domestication is not an event; it is thousands of years of selection, mostly unintentional. A wild sorghum shatters when ripe, scattering its seed. Harvest with a sickle and the plants whose seeds happen to stay attached are the ones you collect and replant. Repeat for centuries and you have a non-shattering crop that depends on humans to reproduce — the defining feature of a domesticate. The same logic produces larger seeds, uniform ripening, loss of dormancy and reduced bitterness. Archaeobotanists trace it in charred grains and seed impressions in pottery, measuring the shift in size and in the shape of the attachment scar across dated layers. In African sequences that shift is often slow and mosaic — cultivation of morphologically wild plants for a long period before full domestication, which suggests low-intensity systems that suited mobile populations. Animals followed a related path: African cattle, with a distinct taurine lineage, plus sheep and goats arriving from the Near East and being bred into local varieties, and the donkey, domesticated in north-east Africa from the Nubian wild ass — the only major livestock species certainly domesticated on the continent.

The agronomic point is increasingly urgent. Sorghum, pearl millet, fonio, cowpea and bambara groundnut tolerate heat and erratic rain far better than maize, wheat or Asian rice. Pearl millet will produce a crop on 300mm of annual rainfall, on sandy soil, at temperatures that shut photosynthesis down in most cereals. Sorghum rolls its leaves and goes dormant under drought, then resumes. Fonio grows on land too poor for anything else and matures before the dry season arrives. Cowpea fixes nitrogen and feeds people and livestock from the same plant. Colonial and post-colonial agricultural policy pushed the opposite way, promoting maize as a modern crop across regions where it is climatically marginal — with the result that a bad rainy season now translates directly into a food crisis in countries whose traditional cereals would have survived it. That is changing. African research institutions, ICRISAT, the African Orphan Crops Consortium and national seed programmes are breeding and promoting these species, and the UN declared 2023 the International Year of Millets. Fonio and teff have found export markets, which is a mixed blessing when domestic prices follow.

African crops and African agricultural knowledge crossed the Atlantic with enslaved people, and both shaped the Americas. Rice cultivation in South Carolina and Georgia drew directly on West African expertise in tidal irrigation, and the plantation economy there was built on skills its enslaved workers already possessed. Okra, black-eyed peas, watermelon, sorghum, kola and yams all crossed, and the food cultures of the American South, Brazil and the Caribbean are unimaginable without them. Coffee travelled the other way round the world: from Ethiopian highlands into Yemen, then to Java, the Caribbean and Brazil, becoming the second most traded commodity on Earth. Kola nut supplied the original flavouring of the world's most famous soft drink. Each of these is an African contribution to global food that almost never appears in the story the consumer is told.

The value chain is where this stops being a heritage story. Coffee is the clearest case. Ethiopia is the origin of arabica and a major producer, and Ethiopian growers receive a small fraction of the retail price of a cup sold in London or Seattle; the value is added in roasting, branding and retail, all offshore. Ethiopia's attempt to trademark the Sidamo, Yirgacheffe and Harar names met resistance from parts of the industry before agreements were reached — a dispute about who owns the reputation of a place. Seed and germplasm raise sharper questions. African crop varieties collected over the twentieth century sit in gene banks abroad. Patents on traits derived from African landraces have been granted with no benefit-sharing, and the enforcement of the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing is uneven. The teff genome was patented by a Dutch company in a deal that Ethiopian authorities later challenged. Meanwhile most of the continent's farmers are smallholders, many of them women, saving and exchanging seed outside any formal system — the practice that produced this entire crop heritage, and the one most threatened by seed laws written for industrial agriculture.

There are real disagreements here beyond the political ones. Dates for early West African agriculture are contested, partly because forest conditions destroy plant remains. Whether African cattle were domesticated locally, imported, or both is argued from genetics and archaeology that do not quite agree. How much yam cultivation predates the Bantu expansion is unclear. Whether low-intensity, long-duration cultivation reflects a different strategy or simply poorer evidence is a live methodological question. What is settled is the headline: Africa domesticated a major share of the world's crops, independently, and continues to hold genetic diversity in those crops that global food security will need.

It is also a practical asset.
