Africa's scientific record runs continuously: mathematics on bone, metallurgy, medicine, astronomy, and today mobile payments, vaccine manufacture and radio astronomy. The gap is not talent or history — it is research funding, retention and the ability to turn discovery into industry at home.

The Ishango bone, recovered from the shore of Lake Edward in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo and dated to roughly twenty thousand years ago, carries three columns of deliberate notches. Interpretations differ — a tally, a lunar record, a doubling sequence, a set of prime numbers — and the honest position is that we cannot know which. What the object does establish is that people in central Africa were recording quantity systematically in the late Stone Age. Similar habits of mind show up later and more legibly: the Yoruba base-twenty counting system with its subtractive shortcuts, the Akan goldweights whose brass figures encode a precise and standardised mass series, the Ethiopian calendar's thirteen months, and the geometric ratios embedded in Ifá divination's 256 odù. None of this is folklore dressed as science. It is abstraction, standardisation and transmission — the three things a knowledge system needs to survive its inventors.

African ironworking is one of the continent's strongest technical claims. Nok furnaces in central Nigeria were smelting by the middle of the first millennium BCE, and Haya smelters in north-western Tanzania built preheated forced-draught furnaces capable of temperatures around 1,800°C — hot enough to produce carbon steel, and hotter than most European bloomeries of the same era. Whether iron technology was independently invented in Africa or arrived from the Near East is still argued; the archaeology at sites such as Termit in Niger keeps pushing dates earlier, and the argument matters less than the demonstrated command of process. Smelters controlled ore selection, charcoal chemistry, tuyère placement and slag tapping, and encoded that control in apprenticeship and ritual so that it could be taught rather than rediscovered.

Chemical analysis of Nubian skeletons from Sudanese sites dated to roughly 350–550 CE found tetracycline deposited in bone at levels indicating sustained dietary exposure, almost certainly from grain fermented with the antibiotic-producing bacterium Streptomyces. Whether Nubian brewers understood the mechanism is unknowable; that they had a therapeutic practice which worked is measurable. The same pattern recurs elsewhere. Nineteenth-century European surgeons observing caesarean sections in the Kingdom of Bunyoro, in present-day Uganda, described banana-wine antisepsis, careful haemostasis and mothers who survived — at a time when the same operation in London was frequently fatal.

Nabta Playa in southern Egypt holds a stone circle aligned to the summer solstice and erected some seven thousand years ago, older than Stonehenge. The Dogon of Mali maintain a detailed cosmology around Sirius whose more spectacular claims have been badly muddled by mid-century European ethnography and should be treated with caution. Firmer ground is Africa's modern astronomy: the Southern African Large Telescope at Sutherland, the Karoo array that forms the African half of the Square Kilometre Array, and the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network which is converting redundant telecom dishes across eight countries into research instruments. These are training pipelines as much as telescopes.

The most-cited African technology story of the century so far is M-Pesa. Launched in Kenya in 2007 by Safaricom, it let people move money by SMS on basic handsets because branch banking had never reached most of them. Within a decade the majority of Kenyan adults used it, and studies credit it with measurably lifting households out of poverty by cutting the cost and risk of remittance. The pattern repeated: Rwanda and Ghana used Zipline's fixed-wing drones to deliver blood and vaccines over roads that flood, rather than waiting for the roads. Africa did not skip a stage out of cleverness alone; it skipped it because the legacy infrastructure that constrains richer countries was simply absent.

Continental science now has structures behind it. The African Academy of Sciences and the AU's Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa set the agenda; H3Africa has funded African-led genomics across dozens of institutions, deliberately keeping samples, analysis and authorship on the continent; Afrigen in Cape Town hosts the WHO's mRNA technology transfer hub; the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences trains postgraduates across six centres. The African Development Bank and the AU both push the 1%-of-GDP research target agreed in 2007, and both note that almost no member state has met it.

Africa is about 18% of world population and produces roughly 3% of global research output and around 1% of pharmaceuticals. Roughly a fifth of African-trained doctors and a large share of PhD-holders work abroad. Neither figure reflects capability: African researchers publish at the top of their fields wherever they are funded. The constraints are money, equipment maintenance, visa regimes that make intra-African collaboration harder than transatlantic collaboration, and industrial policy that has rarely converted research into manufacture. Correcting that is the explicit ambition of Agenda 2063, and the honest measure of progress is not papers published but products made.
