Modern humans left Africa in several waves, not one. Some expansions reached the Levant and even Greece and left no living descendants; one succeeded spectacularly and populated Eurasia, Australia and the Americas. Later movements carried Eurasian ancestry back into North and East Africa. And the migrations that mattered most for Africa itself were the ones that never left it.

One species, many departures
The broad outline is accepted but dates, numbers or details are actively argued by specialists.
The phrase 'Out of Africa' suggests a single dramatic exodus. The evidence describes something messier: repeated dispersals northward and eastward over more than a hundred thousand years, most of them dead ends. A jawbone from Misliya Cave in Israel dates to around 180,000 years ago. A partial skull from Apidima in Greece has been argued, controversially, to be Homo sapiens at 210,000 years. Fossils at Skhul and Qafzeh in the Levant sit around 120,000 to 90,000 years. Teeth from Fuyan Cave in southern China have been claimed at 80,000 years and disputed. What unites these early travellers is that they contributed little or nothing to living populations. They pushed out during wet phases when the Sahara and Arabia carried grass and lakes, and they retreated or died out when the corridors closed.
The expansion that stuck

Between roughly 70,000 and 50,000 years ago a comparatively small population left north-east Africa and did not turn back. Every person alive today whose ancestry lies outside Africa descends from that group. The genetic signature is unmistakable. Non-African populations carry a subset of African variation — a bottleneck, in the technical language — because only a fraction of Africa's diversity walked out. That founder group met and interbred with Neanderthals, leaving one to two per cent Neanderthal ancestry in living non-Africans, and in South-East Asia and Oceania with Denisovans as well. From there the spread was rapid by prehistoric standards: Australia by about 65,000 years ago, Europe by about 45,000, the Americas by at least 15,000 and probably earlier. A single African population became the ancestor of the rest of the world.
The Sahara as a gate, not a wall

Whether people could leave Africa depended on the climate of the Sahara and the Arabian peninsula. During humid phases, monsoon rains pushed north, filling lakes and running rivers across what is now sand, and creating a green corridor from the Sahel to the Nile and the Levant. During dry phases the same territory became one of the most hostile environments on Earth, and the Nile Valley and Sinai narrowed to a single, easily blocked route. The dispersal dates cluster on the wet phases. The southern route across the Bab-el-Mandeb strait to Arabia would also have been shorter at glacial low sea levels. Human movement in and out of Africa has always been paced by rainfall.
Back-migration: the traffic returned

The story is usually told one way, which is a mistake. Populations moved back into Africa repeatedly. Around 3,000 years ago and earlier, Eurasian ancestry entered East Africa, detectable today in Ethiopian, Somali and Kenyan genomes. North Africa received substantial Eurasian gene flow across the Mediterranean and via the Levant, and Berber-speaking populations carry a distinctive mixture with deep local roots. Later, Arab expansion, the Ottoman presence, Indian Ocean trade and the colonial era each moved people and genes into the continent. The modern African gene pool is therefore not a museum of the past. It is the product of continuous movement in both directions.
Movement inside Africa mattered more

For Africa itself, the internal migrations were far more consequential than any departure. Bantu-speaking farmers spread from the Nigeria–Cameroon borderlands east and south over roughly four thousand years, carrying crops, ceramics and eventually iron, and reshaping the languages of half the continent. Nilotic pastoralists moved south through the Nile Valley and into the Great Lakes, bringing cattle-centred ways of life. Cushitic-speaking herders moved from the Horn into East Africa. Austronesian sailors crossed the Indian Ocean from Borneo to settle Madagascar, giving that island a language related to Malay and a rice-and-outrigger culture unlike anything on the nearby mainland. Each of these movements met existing populations — hunter-gatherers, fishers, herders — and the outcome was almost never simple replacement. Genetics shows extensive mixing; linguistics shows borrowing, including the click consonants absorbed into isiXhosa and isiZulu from Khoe and San neighbours.

Three sources, again, and their overlap. Fossils and archaeology give locations and dates: a jaw here, a toolkit there, a shift in pottery style along a river valley. Ancient DNA, where climate has allowed it to survive, gives direct genetic snapshots of past people; African conditions are hostile to DNA preservation, which is why the ancient genomic record is thinner here than in Europe. Modern population genetics reconstructs the past from the variation carried by living people, using shared segments, mutation rates and patterns of linkage. Language adds a fourth. Reconstructed vocabulary can show that a spreading population already had words for cattle, iron or yams — and therefore already had the things.

Plenty. Whether the Apidima skull is Homo sapiens at all. Whether the main exit used the northern Sinai route, the southern Bab-el-Mandeb crossing, or both. Whether earlier dispersals contributed any measurable ancestry to living people, with a minority position arguing for a small Papuan component. Inside Africa, the Bantu expansion is the liveliest debate of all: whether it was a farming migration, a language spread through existing populations, a series of small local movements, or all three at different times and places; how fast it moved; and by which route it reached southern Africa. Specialists in genetics, linguistics and archaeology often read the same evidence differently. What is not in dispute is the direction of the deepest root. Africa is the source population for our species.

This chapter dismantles two persistent ideas. The first is that African populations are somehow static — the people who stayed behind. They are not; the continent's internal history is one of near-constant movement, mixing and reinvention. The second is that human groups are biologically discrete. They are not; the family tree branches recently, mixes constantly and has no clean divisions anywhere on it. It also sets up everything that follows in this library. Migration is not an interruption of African history. It is one of its main engines.

This is not a claim about African pride; it is the settled reading of the fossil, archaeological and genomic evidence, and it reframes every other chapter that follows.

For several thousand years the Sahara was grassland, woodland and lake. The African Humid Period supported fishing villages, hippo and crocodile, cattle herders and one of the richest bodies of rock art on Earth. When the rains failed, the people who lived there moved to the Nile, Lake Chad and the Sahel — and the map of African civilisation was set.
